Mounted Icon: Virgin and Child (in the Eleousa style)

Description

Note: Large icon of the Virgin and Child in the “Eleousa” style (sometimes rendered in English as “Virgin of Tenderness”). The Christ child is seen touching His mother’s face and wrapping one arm around her neck or shoulder, and the Virgin looks with motherly compassion towards her Son. The mutual gestures of loving kindness between the Theotokos and her child give this icon a warmth and tenderness not evident in some other styles of icons of the Virgin and Child.
